Verna M. Schadler, age 87 years of Niles, Michigan died at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph, Michigan following a brief illness.
She was born on February 8, 1927 in Niles to Walter and Helen (Witherall) Butts. She was graduated from Berrien Center (Michigan) High School, and has lived in the Barron Lake community for many years. She was employed at the former Virginia Hardy’s Oven and the former Dixie Cream Donut Shop, both in Niles.
Verna was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary to American Legion Post #26 in Niles. She enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, and watching professional golf tournaments on the television.
On April 19, 1947 in Niles she married Carl H. Schadler with whom she celebrated the thirty-seventh anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on September 27, 1984. She was also preceded in death by their son, John Schadler in 2012; and by her sister, Helen J. Davis in 1993.
Surviving family includes their children, Jo Ann (& David) Cabanaw of Niles, Terry L. (& Cathie) Schadler of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, Betty Lou (& Andrew) Eberhardt of Stockbridge, Georgia, Annette Johnson of Niles, and Carl (& Sharon) Schadler of Plainville, Connecticut, a daughter-in-law, Karla (Mrs. John) Schadler of Niles; twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Verna M. Schadler will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Randy Pearman of Bethel Baptist Church officiating. Committal will follow at Mission Hills.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Verna Schadler may be made to the American Legion Post #26 Auxiliary.
