Shirley Harris

Shirley Ann Mae Harris, age 79 years of Niles, Michigan died peacefully Thursday morning, December 29, 2016 at her home following an extended illness.

She was born on March 21, 1937 in Niles to Ora and Goldie May (Brown) Colcord. She attended Niles Community Schools as a member of the first class to graduate from the new Senior High School. She was employed for several years at the former Bouris Restaurant at Eleventh and Silverbrook.

Shirley was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and volunteered to drive patients for the Berrien County Cancer Service. She and her family went camping just about every-other weekend, usually with the Saint Joseph Valley Hobos chapter of the Good Sam Recreational Vehicle Club. On other weekends they enjoyed equestrian events.

On March 3, 1962 at the Bertrand Bible Church in Niles she married Daryle M. “Pee Wee” Harris who preceded her in death on May 8, 2007. She was also preceded in death by ten siblings including Marilyn Nelson, Joanne Dougall, Jack Colcord, Chalmer Colcord, Lawrence Colcord, Okel Colcord, Francis Colcord, Denver Colcord, and two who died in infancy.

Surviving family includes her children, Ronald Harris of Niles, Roger Harris of Edwardsburg, and Susan Payne and Sharon (& William) Everman, both of Niles; grandchildren Justin Payne, Melinda (& Miguel) Ruiz, Jesika (& Jonathon) Chester, Teisa Templeton, Daryle Whalen, and Ryan Everman; great-grandchildren Braize, Breeona, Jonathon, Jr., Zackeree, Caden, Carson, and Brooklynn; and Shirley’s brother, Norman Colcord of Niles and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Shirley Harris will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home in Niles with Pastor Robert Geans of the First Pentecostal Church of Edwardsburg officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
