Shawn Wreggelsworth

May 7, 1960 — February 6, 2020

Shawn Paul Wreggelsworth, age 59 years, dad, grandpa, fisherman, and friend died at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph, Michigan, ending a remarkable battle against cancer.  His family is grateful for the kind and skilled care of the nurses at Spectrum Lakeland, making Shawn’s last weeks comfortable and pleasant.

He was born on May 7, 1960 in Buchanan, Michigan to Raymond and Gayle (Fain) Wreggelsworth, and was graduated from Buchanan High School.  As a young man he was employed by Tyler Automotive in the autobody repair shop, but for many years he has been employed at Kachur Tree Service.  He has lived in Buchanan and Niles all of his life.

Shawn attended the Church of Christ.  He enjoyed fishing, and did so very well throughout Michigan and Indiana, entering and winning bass fishing tournaments.  He also enjoyed – and was very good at – helping family and friends.  In fact, many considered him a best friend who was their first call when a need arose, and he was always ready to give of himself and anything else that he had to offer.  He was happiest caring for his kids, even foregoing fishing until he knew that his children were all happy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Wreggelsworth, and by a sister, Devra Britt in 2009.

Shawn is survived by his children, Paul (& Laura) Wreggelsworth of Niles, John (& Lacey) Wreggelsworth of Niles, William Wreggelsworth of Niles, Andrew Wreggelsworth of Plymouth, Michigan, and Amelia (& Luke) Oliver of South Bend, Indiana; granddaughter Rae Wreggelsworth; Shawn’s mother, Gayle Wreggelsworth of Buchanan and his siblings, Quinn (& Laura) Wreggelsworth of LaPorte, Indiana, Troy (& Tami) Wreggelsworth of Cary, North Carolina, and Jodi (& Luk) Selca of Durham, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and Shawn’s companion, Sonja Lenox.

The family of Shawn Wreggelsworth will share some memories and honor and celebrate his life from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Bell Professional Building, 305 North Third Street in Niles.  Please use the parking lot at Fourth and Sycamore Street, and enter from there.  Contributions in memory of Shawn may be made to the Four Flags Bassmasters, dedicated to youth, conservation, and bass anglers of Michigan, 549 Clark Street, Niles, Michigan, 49120, http://fourflagsbassmasters@michiganbassnation.com .  Arrangements were made at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home in Niles.  Online condolences may be left at:

Shawn was literally a trophy-winning fisherman, and a champion dependable and trustworthy friend to many, but his campaign to care for his family – especially his kids and their spouses, and Miss Rae – became the greatest victory of his life.
