Sandy Colleen Reed, age 68 years, of Niles, Michigan died on Monday, February 2, 2015 following an extended illness, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She was at her home with her family gathered around her.

Sandy was born on November 5, 1946 in Springfield, Illinois to Vera (Clark) Robbins and Bernard Robbins. She graduated from Niles High School in 1964. She earned a BA in General Studies from Indiana University at South Bend and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University. She was employed most recently at Madison Center in South Bend, retiring in 2009. Prior to her work as a social worker, Sandy worked as a medical laboratory technician managing the laboratories at Buchanan and Stark hospitals. Sandy loved animals, flowers, gardening and pursuing her family’s genealogy.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Dr. John Reed; her mother, Vera Robbins of Niles, Michigan; children Michele Weir of Wheaton, Illinois, Pamela Schneider of Chicago, Illinois and Karena Schneider of Seattle, Washington; grandchild Logan Blume; sisters Sue Trossen of South Lyon, Michigan, Donna (& Jeff) Hisson of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Lonna (& Scott) Dick of Niles, Michigan; brother Bernard (& Cindy) Robbins of Elkhart, Indiana and many nieces and nephews. Also very important to Sandy was her “adopted” family and caregivers, Julie Martin, Christy Martin and family.

The funeral service for Sandy Reed will held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Sandy be made to The ALS Association, Michigan Chapter.
