Biography

Richard Hershel Hamman, age 69 years of Niles, Michigan passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Lakeland Healthcare Hospital in Niles. He was born December 8, 1946 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Richard C. and Beatrice (Moses) Hamman.

Richard graduated from Penn High School and was a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1968 until 1970, during which he earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, an Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star Medal. Richard was a self-employed roofer and contractor of Hamman Roofing. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid fisherman and loved to go to the casino and travel.

On June 26, 1971 in Niles, Richard married Dianne Stark, with whom recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Dianne survives with their daughters, Kristen (& Toby) Johnson of Buchanan, Michigan, Shelly (& Ravien) Hamman of Niles and Angela (& Gabe) Lagina of Kalamazoo, Michigan and his three grandchildren, of whom he was so proud: Luka Lagina, Olivia Lagina and Mya Johnson. Also surviving is one sister, Karen (& Tom) Stemes of Mishawaka; a cousin, Betty (Hamman) Moss of Antioch, Illinois and his nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Richard Hershel Hamman will be held at 11:00a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Rev. Daniel Barz of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Buchanan officiating.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-7:00p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Donations in memory of Richard may be made to either the Mishawaka VFW Post 360 or to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buchanan.
