Peter Karl Wienke

Peter Karl Wienke of Niles, Michigan passed away Saturday, March 15, 2025.

He was born April 23, 1944 in Niles, Michigan, one of two children born to Theodore and Phena Wienke.

Pete is survived by his sister Phoebe Wienke PhD of Cooper Harbor, Michigan; as well as his three children, Chris (Jessica), Jen, and David from Chicago and suburbs. He will also be dearly missed by his three grandchildren, Jack, Ryan and Blayke.

Pete was a passionate Michigan football fan and loved everything U of M. He was overjoyed with the Niles Football Team this past fall and wished he could have seen the games in person. Until this year, he was a fixture at Niles football games and wrestling meets. He enjoyed skiing, reading, and making passive aggressive jokes about all the Notre Dame people around here. He had a great sense of humor and hated being called Peter. He was a State Champion Wrestler at Niles High School in 1962, an All-Conference Football Player and an all-star on track. After thirty years of teaching physical education in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago he retired back to Niles, Michigan where he always felt most at home. Pete will be dearly missed by all those who loved him.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in Halbritter Wickens Funeral Services, 615 East Main Street, Niles. Following the visitation, Pete will be laid to rest in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

The family prefers contributions in memory of Pete be made to the Niles High School Wrestling Program, 1441 Eagle Street, Niles, Michigan 49120.
