Nadine Kathryn Hagey-Corse, age 78 years, formerly of Buchanan, Michigan, mother, grandmother, sister, creative artist, devout Methodist, and award-winning Toastmaster died peacefully Sunday morning, January 29, 2023 at the Dujarie House in Notre Dame, Indiana following an extended illness. Her family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care provided by the staff of Dujarie.
She was born on September 30, 1944 in Elkhart, Indiana to Clarence M. and Leona M. (Rhinesmith) Hoke, and was graduated from Concord High School in Elkhart. She continued her education at the former The Commercial Art School in Chicago, known as the “Vouge School” as its focus included both fashion and art. She also trained at the former Presbyterian-Saint Luke’s Hospital and School of Nursing in Chicago (now Rush University Medical Center), and served as a nurse’s aide there and in private duty home care. She came to Buchanan in 1972, and finally moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1991.
Nadine was a member of the Evangel Heights United Methodist Church in South Bend, faithfully seated in the front row for all 52 weeks of many years, and attended a local United Methodist Church when she lived elsewhere. She was also an active member of the South Bend Tuesday Night Club of Toastmasters International which meets at the Public Library Main Branch. She received accolades and won trophies at Toastmasters, and organized a Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program which met at her home.
As a young mother, she was a volunteer adult leader for her sons’ Cub Scout Pack, and used her sewing skills to tailor clothing for her children. She also enjoyed knitting, but her greatest interest was art. She was a skilled painter, working in both watercolor and acrylic, but she was clearly gifted with creativity and able to work in multi-media, and could sculpt three-dimensional renderings in a variety of material.
She was first married to Harold Hawley. Later, on September 30, 1972 in Elkhart she married Lee Preston Hagey, who preceded her in death on November 28, 1984. Then, on May 7, 1992 in South Bend she married Thomas James Corse who preceded her in death on May 4, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and by a brother, Jonathan Hoke.
Surviving family includes her children, Patrick (& Wendy) Hagey of South Bend, Shirley (& Shane) Penley of Niles, Michigan, and Loren Hagey of South Bend; Lee’s children, David, Jim, John, and Joe; Thomas’ children, Kim and Laurie; grandchildren Tara Shell, Theron Langford, Tori Langford, Corbin (& Kaitlyn) Penley, and Jerrid (& Heaven) Penley; great-grandchildren Aurora, Reese, Ava, Joshua, Wayne, Preston, Waylon, and Paisley; Nadine’s sister, Ethlyn Sternberg of Martinsville, Indiana, sister-in-law, Carol Hoke, and several nieces and nephews.
The family of Nadine Hagey-Corse will gather to share memories and honor her life at a Committal Service in the Memorial Chapel of Highland Cemetery in South Bend in the near future, with the schedule announced on this website when determined. Friends and relatives may assist with the expense of these final arrangements through a portal on this website.
