Mr. Purna Mazumder

Mr. Purna Chandra Mazumder, age 71 years of Niles, Michigan died at 7:03 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana following a brief illness.

He was born on December 13, 1942 in Rangpur, Bangladesh to Indra Ghosh and Shoshi Kola Mazumder. He lived much of his life in Rangpur where he owned and operated a retail grocery specializing in grain and spices. He has lived in Niles since 2007.

Purna was a member of the Rangpur Baptist Church. In Niles, he attended the Bangeli Community Church, which meets at the First Presbyterian Church, and he also attended services of the First Presbyterian congregation. He was a man of deep faith, well- known for hours spent in prayer and Bible study. He loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed the food of McDonald’s restaurants.

In 1963 at Mymensingh, Bangladesh he married Nelima Hazra who survives. Also surviving are their children, Flora Arpita Shilu (& Bivian D’Silva) of Niles, Albert (& Shelly) Mazumder of Niles, Elora (& Samuel) Halder of Weslaco, Texas, and Aldrin (& Mary) Mazumder of Niles; grandchildren Charles (& Sagorika) D’Silva, Alex D’Silva, Alisa Mazumder, Tressy Mazumder, Andrew Mazumder, Christina Halder, Alfred Halder, Angelica Mazumder, and Ellio Mazumder; Purna’s siblings, Provat Mazumder and Juthika Mazumder, both of Rangpur, Shefli Sajjan and Millie Pandey, both of Khulna, Bangladesh, and Manju Sarkar of Oakland, California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Taposh Mazumder, Parvin, and Kali Tara Saha.

The funeral service for Mr. Purna Mazumder will be at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the church officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church for an hour following the funeral. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
