Moonyean Julia Quick

March 13, 1934 — October 14, 2024

Niles

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Moonyean Julia Quick. She passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2024. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Sherwood, their two sons, Terry and Todd (Susan), and her sister Durbin (Mike) Shikany and nephews Ed, Ben, Andy and niece Nicki. Moonie was preceded in death by her son Brian and nephew Tim.

Moonyean, or Moonie for short, was born in Eaton Rapids, Michigan on March 13, 1934, to Ben and Evelyn Van Wagner. She attended Eaton Rapids schools and graduated in 1952. After High School she obtained a Civil Service position at the Michigan State Capital Building in Lansing, Michigan where she met a strapping young gentleman, Sherwood, who just returned from the Navy. They were married on June 19, 1955. During their 69 years of marriage, they had three boys, Brian, Terry - a Lead Mission Safety Specialist supporting NASA living in the Houston area, and Todd – a retired IT Executive living in Bruce Township, Michigan.

Moonie was employed by the Niles Community Schools as the Elementary School Librarian where you would be corrected if you said “Libarian” instead of “Librarian”. Moonie took pride in her work and enjoyed helping her students find books and loved reading aloud a good story to the students in front of the library fish tank. She worked at the old Central Elementary School, now the site of the Niles Post Office. After the closure of Central Elementary School, she moved to the Ballard Elementary School library. She retired from Ballard in June of 1990.

While at Ballard, Moonie made lifelong friendships with several teachers, until this day, they refer to themselves as the “Ballard Girlfriends”. For decades, Moonie and her girlfriends gathered and celebrated birthdays and significant life events, supported each other, planned outings and traveled - and above all – they laughed! These friendships continue today, even though time, distance and health have altered things. Moonie cherished her girlfriends and the fun and laughter they shared.

During retirement, Moonie enjoyed knitting, gardening, traveling to Florida and England, and always time with her family.

Visitation will be held at the New Journey United Methodist Church in Niles, Michigan on Friday, October 18th starting at 11:00am. Her funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon. Afterwards, the family invites you to join them for lunch at the church.

Flowers can be sent to the church, or in lieu of flowers the family encourages a memorial gift in Moonyean’s name to Alzheimer's Disease Research.
