Mildred Sophia Burns, age 106 years of Niles, Michigan and formerly of Milwaukee, Wisconsin passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Riveridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Niles. The family would like to thank the staff of Riveridge for their kind care of Mildred in her final years.
She was born on September 30, 1910 in Omaha, Nebraska to Joseph and Sophia (Pros) Vasko. She lived in the Milwaukee area from 1929 until 2000 when she moved to Niles.
Mildred was a past member and former secretary of the Milwaukee African Violet Society, which fostered her lifelong love of horticulture and gardening. Her devotion to her family leaves a void that will always be felt, but was a lesson from which they all have learned.
She was the adored wife of Howard O. Burns, who preceded her in death in 1982; and was the treasured mother of James M. (& Aileen) Burns of Las Vegas, Nevada and Sharon L. (& Carl) Peeters of Niles, who survive. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, James M. Burns, Jr., and by her brothers, Eldon and Arthur Vasko.
Cremation has taken place and interment will occur at the Wisconsin Memorial Gardens in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Contributions in memory of Mildred Burns may be made to Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles, whose clergy regularly brought the Holy Eucharist to her at Riveridge. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home in Niles.
