Mary Ann Hamrick, age 73 years of Niles, Michigan died surrounded by friends, caregivers, and her husband on Saturday morning, January 9, 2016 at her home following a two year battle with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She was grateful to God for giving her a partner, her husband, Robert just weeks before her diagnosis, to help her through this very difficult challenge.
She was born on September 6, 1942 in Elkhart, Indiana to Robert Lawrence and Ellen Imogene (Kile) Burke. She graduated from Concord Community High School, and attended several local colleges in pursuit of an Associates degree. She was a bookkeeper for several area businesses, and with her former husband, Roy Schoenfeld owned and operated the former Wonder Lite Industries, Inc. in Edwardsburg from 1985 until 1997.
After a few more years working for small companies – and at the age of 60 years – she volunteered for a 12 month mission for her church in the North Carolina/Raleigh mission office. After returning home, she worked at various small companies, and then served as Treasurer of the Village of Edwardsburg for 8 years before retirement.
Mary Ann was a member of the Niles Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed genealogy, gardening, and crochet.
On March 22, 2013 at the Niles Ward church she married Robert Hamrick who survives. Also surviving are her step-children, Ronald (& Janet) Schoenfeld of Durham, North Carolina, Heidi (& Willems) Martins of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Timothy Schoenfeld of Peoria, Arizona, George Leonard (& Deb) Hamrick of Niles, and Jackie (& Garry) Bauer of Osceola, Indiana; fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and Mary Ann’s sister, Patricia Sue Burke of Fort Wayne, Indiana and brother, Robert Lawrence (& "Be") Burke, Jr. of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by a son, James L. Sappington who died in a motor vehicle accident at thirteen years old.
The funeral service for Mary Ann Hamrick will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Niles Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Lynn Allen Ferris officiating, assisted by Elder Bill G. Crider. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church beginning at Noon Saturday.
Contributions in memory of Mary Ann Hamrick may be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1710, New York, New York 10122 for Carcinosarcoma Malignant Mixed Mullerian Tumor (MMMT) research. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
