Mark L. Poehlman, 74, of Schoolcraft, died Sunday, March 9, 2025 in the comfort of his family’s presence.
His life began January 25, 1951 in Lafayette, Indiana, born to Robert and Mary Poehlman. He married Teresa “Terri” Smith on October 29, 1977 in the First Baptist Church in Niles, Michigan. After nearly forty-three years of marriage, she preceded him in death on June 15, 2020.
Always an athlete, Mark was passionate about sports and was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame and Chicago-based teams. From track and football in his youth, to running marathons, golfing, and bowling in his adulthood, Mark loved to challenge himself. He was proud of his Italian heritage, celebrating it whenever he got the chance. Despite decades of gradually worsening lung disease—a result of decades of laborious jobs to support his family—he never failed to give a helping hand or a friendly word after a hard day’s work. He often offered guidance to those around him and could find a way to connect with almost anyone. Mark enjoyed sharing his love of music with family and friends, frequently singing along and dancing to whatever was playing at the time, even if it was just a tune he remembered. A man with a gift for details and a strong sense of justice, he was always seeking to do what was right and fair. He had an affinity and appreciation for nature and animals, a value which he shared with his late wife and helped to inspire within their children.
Mark will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by two daughters, Angela (Greg) Schmoyer of South Bend, Indiana, Morgyn (Rachel Plotner) Poehlman of Portage; one son, Anthony Poehlman of Portage; six grandchildren, Monica, Joey, Anna, Nicholas, Andrew, Sophia; one great granddaughter, Rose; one sister, Lori Enboden of Buchanan; three brothers, Lee Poehlman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Kirk (Peter Salathe) Poehlman of Carmel, Indiana, Mike (Janette) Poehlman of Miami, Florida; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; one son, Nicholas Poehlman; and one brother, Kerry Poehlman.
The family will observe a private remembrance at this time.
The family prefers contributions in memory of Mark be made to SPCA of Southwest Michigan, 6955 West KL Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49009.
