Joyce Elaine (Canfield) Dreitzler, 94, of Buchanan, died in Niles, Friday, September 27, 2024.
Her life began February 12, 1930, in Mishawaka, Indiana, born to Donald and Gladys (Phillippi) Canfield.
She married Melvin E. “Pete” Dreitzler September 15, 1951, in Buchanan, Michigan. After fifty-seven years of marriage, he preceded her in death May 3, 2009. They became proud parents to their sons, George and Ronald. They raised their family in the Liberty Heights neighborhood and had a close community of friends. In the summertime, Joyce spent time on Smith Lake, fishing and frying the best fish. She enjoyed winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Joyce treasured time spent with her grandchildren and later her great grandchildren. She and Pete could always be spotted at their grandchildren’s sports games and supported them regardless of the outcome. She lit up around her family and usually had a few extra treats waiting. She was known for her skills in the kitchen; many holiday dinners were enjoyed around her table and finished with the best pies.
She had many lifelong friends that she enjoyed playing cards and bingo with and taking her many trips to the casino with. She spent her free time sewing, crafting, and gardening. Joyce was a big sports fan. She enjoyed watching her favorite teams: Indiana basketball, Michigan and Michigan State football, and the Chicago Bears. She attended Buchanan High School and was a lifelong fan of the Buchanan Bucks.
Joyce will always be remembered for her warm embrace and welcoming smile. Even in her last months, she maintained a sense of independence and was very proud of her family.
Joyce will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her son Ronald (Elizabeth) Dreitzler; daughter-in-law, Michele (Rich) Klemm; grandchildren, Derek Dreitzler, Emily (Josh) Champion, Kathryn (Ousmane) Dreitzler-Mariko, Johanna (Douglas) Summers; great-grandchildren, Cyler, Izabelle, Jax, Hudson, and Hayden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband; her son, George Dreitzler; siblings, Lavon (Mike) Phillipi, Lois Rosenthal-Johansen, Ervin (Bud) Canfield, and Beverly Rudlaff.
The family will observe a private remembrance at this time.
