Joseph Szot, Jr. age 87 years, formerly of Niles, Michigan died on Monday, April 17, 2017 in Merrillville, Indiana following a brief illness.
He served in the United States Air Force, and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed at National-Standard in Niles for 30 years, and then worked for the Cass County Road Commission until retiring for good.
Joe loved talking, tinkering, his dogs, and northern Michigan – in that order. Dad was a walking encyclopedia on our family, and he and Mom kept track of them all better than anyone else.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi (Huffman); 2 sons, John (Pat) of Merrillville and Jim (Cindy) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 3 grandchildren, Tom Kathleen, and Crystal; and 2 siblings, Ron of Louisiana and Jane Muir of Bay City, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Mary Szot.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home at 615 East Main Street in Niles. Contributions in memory of Joe – and to honor his volunteer service - may be made to Habitat for Humanity International, 121 Habitat Street, Americus, Georgia 31709; or at www.habitat.org.
