Jack J. Smith, 92 of Niles passed away at home on his birthday, March 17, 2018.
Jack was born on March 17, 1926 in Dowagiac to the late Robert and Calla (Lillie) Smith. On March 5, 1949 in Niles, he married Phyllis Kocher who preceded him in death on February 18, 2018. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert, Richard, Dean Smith, his sister Vivian Morford and step brothers Delbert and George Smith.
Surviving Jack are his children; Mary Adams of Niles, Jack (Deborah) Smith of Buchanan, Michael (Stephen) Smith of Coraopolis, PA, Tracey (Debra) Smith of Niles. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, his brother Robert Smith, and his sister-in-law Evelyn Smith of Dowagiac.
Jack honorably served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an infantryman who helped liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp.
Jack was a Heavy Equipment operator, he worked for True’s Excavation for 27 years. He had previously worked at Burkett Excavation in Benton Harbor. Jack enjoyed fishing and hunting. Jack loved working with horses. Camping with his grandchildren was a special time for him.
Visitation for Jack will be on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 10 am to 12 noon. A Funeral Service will begin at Noon. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Mission Hills.
