Hazel Mitchell

July 5, 1920 — October 19, 2017

Hazel Arlene Mitchell, age 97 years, former longtime resident of Edwardsburg, Michigan died peacefully at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017 with family gathered around at the Boulevard Health Center in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

She was born on July 5, 1920 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to William and Cecilia (McDonald) Eade.  She attended school in Pennsylvania, and has lived in Niles, Holland, and Edwardsburg since 1954.  She provided daycare for children at her home for many years.

Hazel was a very faithful and active member of the former First Assembly of God in Niles (now Michiana Christian Embassy).  She enjoyed practicing many homemaking skills including cooking and baking – her homemade bread, pies, and cheesecake were favorites – and decorating for Christmas.  She also loved being a grandmother.

On January 5, 1946 in Jeannette, Pennsylvania she married Theodore “Ted” Mitchell with whom she celebrated the remarkable sixty-second anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on November 28, 2008.  She was also preceded in death by all twelve of her siblings and their spouses, Roy (& Edna) Eade, Harry (& Pauline) Eade, Lester (& Spira) Eade, Earl (& Catherine) Eade, William Eade, Emily (& Frank Bernard, and Harvey, Myrtle, Stella, Eugene, James, and Walter Eade, all of whom died in their youth or childhood.

Surviving family includes her children, Arlene Maxim of Troy, Michigan, Linda (& Jack) Wagner of Bargersville, Indiana, Rev. Ted (& Francine) Mitchell of Edwardsburg, and Tim (& Jolie) Mitchell of Battle Creek, Michigan; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and fifteen great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Hazel Mitchell will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the New Beginnings Ministries, at Thirteenth & Oak in Niles – where the Assembly of God originally met – with Senior Pastor Eric Jarvis of the First Assembly of God in South Haven, Michigan officiating.  Committal will follow at Mission Hills.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home at 615 East Main Street in Niles.  Contributions in memory of Mrs. Mitchell may be made to the Christian Assembly of God, 7835 Lover’s Lane, Portage, Michigan  49002.
