Harold Butterworth

Harold Jack “Stink” Butterworth, age 88 years of Niles, Michigan died on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend following a brief illness. He was born February 17, 1928 in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania to Clarence and Inez (Rogers) Butterworth.

Harold worked as a coalminer as a child in Pennsylvania and then retired from Bendix Corporation in South Bend after 42 years of service. Harold coached baseball for his children in Niles and enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially his Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs or Pittsburg Steelers. He also loved to gamble, whether playing slot machines at the casino or watching the horse or dog races.

On July 24, 1954 in Niles, Harold married Doris Allison with whom he celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary before her death in 1995. Harold was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters and one great-grandson.

Surviving family includes children, Jeff (& Robin) Butterworth of Niles, Greg Butterworth of Niles, Donna (& Paul) Mueller of Buchanan, Diane Williams of Niles, Mike Butterworth of Niles, Deena (& Dennis) Butterworth-Allen of Niles; 7 grandchildren, Jamie, Jeffery, Jr., Eric, Kaley, Victoria, Justin and Madison; 4 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Harold is also survived by a sister, Helen Vella and sister-in-law Kate Butterworth, both of Niles.

The funeral service for Harold Jack “Stink” Butterworth will be held at 2:00p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016 at the Halbritter Funeral Home with Pastor Wayman Bond of First Missionary Baptist Church, Buchanan officiating. Interment will follow at Mission Hills.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home from 6-8:00p.m. on Sunday. Donations in memory of Harold may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
