Evelyn Surfus

Evelyn Jane Surfus, age 80 years of Niles, Michigan died unexpectedly at 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Lakeland Hospital – Niles.

She was born on June 21, 1936 in Akron, Ohio to Lee Almon and Nina Evelyn (Egerly) Madrid. She was graduated from Fort Wayne (Indiana) Northside High School, and continued her education in nurse’s college. She was employed for many years as a teacher’s aide in the Huntertown Elementary School of Northwest Allen County (Indiana) Schools. She has lived in Niles since 1998.

Evelyn was a member of the Summit Church of Niles. She enjoyed the fellowship of table games and cards - especially Euchre – and loved to crochet. Her greatest joy was The Lord Jesus Christ and her family.

She was first married on September 28, 1959 to Dale Kaiser who preceded her in death on June 20, 1967. On June 12, 1970 she married Clem Wetzel who preceded her in death on October 28, 1970. On July 6, 1973 she married Don Surfus who died on February 26, 2016.

Surviving family includes her children, Donald (& Jody) Kaiser of Fort Wayne and Jenny (& Tony) Sergio of Niles; and grandchildren, Rosario (& Hannah) Sergio, Matthew Sergio, Sophia Sergio, Jared Sergio, and Hannah Sergio.

The funeral service for Evelyn Surfus will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Summit Church, 1700 West River Road, Niles with the Rev. Daniel Miller of the church officiating. Committal services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the IOOF (Oddfellows) Cemetery, 1109 Hartzell Road, New Haven, Indiana.

Contributions in memory of Evelyn may be made to the Summit Church, 1700 West River Road, Niles, Michigan 49120, or to Life Action Ministries, Post Office Box 31, Buchanan, Michigan 49107. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
