Evelyn Winship (Weber) Powers, 90, formerly of Sassafras Lane in Niles, Michigan, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Woodland Terrace of Longmeadow in Niles.
She was born on December 28, 1923 in Washington Crossing, New Jersey to John L. and Evelyn C. (Winship) Weber. As a young lady, she fulfilled her ambition to be a secretary, working in the patent law office of Bennett Crain in Washington, D.C. She continued that job until her marriage on December 2, 1942 to William J. Powers, Jr.
Evelyn devoted herself to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, excelling at all. She was very active at Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, holding various positions of service throughout the years. She also volunteered as a literacy tutor, worked with Meals on Wheels, and was a member of the Pawating Auxiliary at Lakeland Community Hospital. Evelyn was a long-standing member of the Seepawa Reading Club and an avid Scrabble fan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. William J. Powers, Jr., U.S. Navy, Ret. on August 4, 2007; and by her brothers, John, Edward, and Lewis Weber, and sister, Harriet Willard.
Surviving family includes her sons, Jack Powers of Zephyrhills, Florida, Ted (& Ann) Powers of Woodridge, Illinois, and Bill (& Sherry) Powers of Adelphi, Maryland, and daughter, Lyn (& Andy) Stegemiller of North Liberty, Indiana; grandchildren Liz Powers, Lindsay and Brian Powers, and Dan, Aaron, Nathan, and Lucas Stegemiller; and Evelyn’s sister, Mary Weber of Savannah, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the wonderful people at Woodland Terrace and Heartland Hospice for their care of Evelyn.
The Episcopal Burial Rite for Evelyn Powers will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014 at Trinity Episcopal Church by The Reverend Pamela V. Sten of the congregation, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ted Powers. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church to support the Community Meal program. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
