Ella Quick

Ella Mae Quick, age 85 years of Niles, Michigan died at 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Lakeland Hospital – Niles following an extended illness.

She was born on July 6, 1930 in McCrory, Arkansas to Grover Chester and Lorene (Free) Bevills. She was graduated from McCrory High School in 1948 and came to Niles the same year. She was employed at the former Niles grocery stores of A&P, and Kroger; and had more recently been employed at the CVS pharmacy.

Ella was a member of the Church of Christ on Huron Street, and had volunteered with the Pawating Auxiliary at Lakeland Hospital. She enjoyed flower gardening, traveling throughout the United States, and wintering in Florida; but her greatest joy was grandmothering.

In 1948, following her graduation – immediately following her graduation – Mr. John A. Quick was waiting for her, and they were married on that day: May 21; having honored Ella’s father by waiting for her to graduate, which was highly unusual in Arkansas in that era. Earlier this year they celebrated the remarkable Sixty-seventh anniversary of their marriage.

Surviving family includes her husband, John A. Quick and their children, Janet (& Jim) Martin of Niles, Joan (& Fred) Hanselman of Buchanan, Michigan, and Lieutenant Colonel John (& Patti) Quick, USMC, Retired of Niles; grandchildren Jerry (& Stacy) Hanselman, Jamie (& Louie) McGarvey, Curt (& Laura) Hanselman, Laura (& Rex) Butts, Caleb Quick, and Jacob (& Annie) Quick; great-grandchildren Jason, Abby, Nate, twins Jackson and Cady, Caryn, and Jared; and Ella’s siblings, Frances Campbell of Hammond, Indiana and Chester Lynn Bevills of Denver, Colorado; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Kenny James Butts, who died in childhood; and a sister, Chestene Smith.

The funeral service for Ella Mae Quick will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2015 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Mr. David Thompson of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be private on Tuesday at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. Contributions in memory of Ella may be made to the Smile Train, P.O.Box 96231, Washington, D.C.; or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas.
