Elizabeth Westveer, age 54 years of Niles, Michigan died at 4:07 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana following an extended illness.
She was born on October 11, 1960 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Robert William and JoAnn (Bennett) Smart. She was graduated from Niles High School, attended Southwestern Michigan College, and has lived in Niles most of her life. She owned and operated the Creditors Service Bureau and The Bell Building.
Liz was proud of her community, and volunteered with many organizations which encouraged and served both the greater Niles area and the downtown businesses. She was formerly a member of the board of The Salvation Army in Niles, and Past-President of the Niles Noon Optimist Club. She was a member and former Woman of the Year of the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce.
She had a great fondness for animals, keeping pets in the house and supporting the local pet refuge. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and scenic cruises, and flower gardening and scrapbooking.
On February 14, 2012 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee she married Mark E. Westveer, who survives. Also surviving are her mother, JoAnn Krueger of Niles; a half-sister, Tab (& Roger) Miner of Galesburg, Michigan; and several children for whom she was a grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert W. Smart on June 22, 2010.
The funeral service for Liz Westveer will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Major Tracey Walters of The Salvation Army in Niles officiating. Committal will follow at Mission Hills.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Liz may be made to The Salvation Army in Niles New Building Fund.
