Dorothy Schmidt

Dorothy Mae Schmidt, age 99, of River Bluff Road, Niles, Michigan died on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph, Michigan, unexpectedly, but of natural causes. She was born January 11, 1913 in Saint Joseph, Michigan to William and Hulda (Schultz) Tollas. She was a 1932 graduate of Saint Joseph High School. On July 16, 1939 in Saint Joseph, Michigan she married Walter J. “Pappy” Schmidt and moved to the Niles area soon after. Walter preceded her in death on June 4, 1999.

Dorothy was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Niles where she was very active in the Women’s Fellowship.

She is survived by daughters Joyce (& Bill) Saunders of Sisters Lake, Michigan and Joan Schmidt of Niles, grandson Scott Saunders of Niles, granddaughter Amy (& Bill) Green of Edwardsburg and 5 great-grandchildren; Derek Green, Zoe Laubach, Channing Green, Madelyn Saunders and Allen Saunders.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers; Herbert, Alfred, Henry and Charles Tollas and 3 sisters; Marguerite Tollas, Gladys Smith and Agnes Landeck.

Funeral service for Dorothy Mae Schmidt will be held at 11:00a.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Saint John’s United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harry L. Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8:00p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to Saint John’s United Church of Christ.
