Charles Callahan

Charles Jerry Callahan, age 77 years formerly of Niles, Michigan died at 11:05 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver, Indiana following an extended illness.

He was born on March 16, 1939 in Niles to Alva Woodrow and Jane Lydia (Mosier) Callahan. He graduated from Niles High School, Class of 1957, and continued his education with several technical certifications and college courses. He had been employed in the commercial laundry service, and moved up through the management of the industry. He has lived in Michigan City and Walkerton, Indiana and in Florida before settling in Culver after his health failed.

Charles always enjoyed gardening and maintaining beautiful flowerbeds at home. He was a friend to all animals. More so, he befriended every person he met, being kind and compassionate to all, and leaving no one a stranger. He is remembered as a Man of God, a Man of family, and of love.

On April 8, 1972 in Michigan City, Indiana he married the former Edrena Rose Paulding with whom he celebrated the forty-second anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on November 15, 2014.

Surviving family includes the children, Arthur “Skip” (& Barbara) Callahan of Rochester, Indiana, Douglas (& Jenny) Callahan of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathleen Fries of Herndon, Virginia; grandchildren Sarah Callahan, Charles Callahan, Nicholas Callahan, Andrew Callahan, and Morgan Fries; great-grandchild, Sawyer Callahan; and Charles’ siblings, Charlene (& Mike) Hipsak of Mishawaka, Indiana, Roger (& Cheryl) Callahan of Dowagiac, Michigan, Joy Schmidt of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Richard (& Cathy) Callahan of Deltona, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

The Memorial Mass for Charles Callahan will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles by the Rev. Christian Johnston of the parish. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Contributions in memory of Charles may be made to the National Stroke Association for education and support for stroke survivors and family members. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
