Betty Shelton

Betty Jo Shelton, age 82 years of Granger, Indiana died at 12:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross, following an extended illness. Betty was born on December 14, 1932 in Paducah, Kentucky to John and Norma Jean (Settle) Kasper. She graduated from Tilghman High School in Paducah, moving to Niles in 1953.

On May 9, 1953 in Meridian Mississippi she married James C. Shelton, with whom she celebrated the Sixty-second anniversary of their wedding.

Betty worked at Shelton's Farm Market for many years alongside her husband Jim. She loved music, especially from her era, including Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Patsy Cline, and later Alan Jackson. She enjoyed reading, doing jigsaw and word puzzles, attending family activities and picnics, and working with the young people at market. Her sacrifice and diligence was important to the early success of Shelton Farms where she was lovingly known to all as “Miss Betty.”

The most important thing of all to Betty was her family. She loved her grandkids dearly, always following their many activities.

Surviving family includes her husband, James C. Shelton and their children, Mike (& Kathleen) Shelton, Patresa Shelton, Kimberly Shelton, and Kevin (& Kim) Shelton all of Niles, and Jon Shelton (& Lisa) of Simi Valley, California; grandchildren Kelly (& Corey) Marrow, Sarah (& Jim) Zawacki, Brandon (& Jenifer) Hood, Joshua (& Willow Wyman) Hood, Nicholas Shelton, twins MacKenzie and Michael Shelton, Alison (& Betsy) Moss, Dan Cloutier, Jesse (& Mandy) Johnson, Katie (& Tanner) Riley, April (& Troy) Meek, James Shelton, Kamden Bestle, Jimmy, Sam Shelton, and Charlie Shelton; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a her parents, her sister Mary Ann Peavler, and a granddaughter, Lindsey Cloutier.

The Shelton family would like to extend a special thank you to Betty’s wonderful caregivers, Barb, Kina, Mary, and Terry.

Services for Betty Jo Shelton will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Berrien Center Bible Church in Berrien Center, Michigan with Pastor Bill Zebell of the church, officiating. Committal will follow at Mission Hills.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

Contributions in memory of Betty may be made to Brandywine Schools, towards the "Betty Shelton Athletic Scholarship Fund".
