Alfred Lee Justice, age 94 years formerly of Niles, Michigan died peacefully at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 with family gathered around him at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton, Michigan. His family is grateful for the kind and dignified care provided by the staff at White Oaks.
He was born on September 8, 1922 in Tazewell County, Virginia to Henry J. and Myrtle (Ball) Justice. He was graduated from the Richlands (Virginia) High School and enlisted in the United States Army. He served more than six years, received a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant, and was honorably discharged as a Veteran of World War II. He came to Niles, and signed-on with the New York Central Railroad. He served as a locomotive brakeman, and stayed on the railroad for several years after the Niles facilities were transferred elsewhere. He then came to be employed at National-Standard in Niles from which he retired.
Al attended Saint Mary Catholic Church with his wife, and was a member of the American Legion Post #26 in Niles, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5315 in Baldwin, Michigan. He had traveled with the Talons-Out Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to experience all the national monuments and memorials, especially the World War II Memorial. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and the companionship of his pet dogs, always a German Weimaraner.
On July 11, 1942 at Saint Mary Catholic Church he married the former Rose Marie Frucci with whom he celebrated the remarkable Sixtieth Anniversary of their wedding prior to her death on January 30, 2003. They were preceded in death by a son, Allen Justice in July of 1967, and by Al’s siblings, Doris Kuzio, Phyllis Justus, Kermit Justice, and Betty Kuzio.
Surviving family includes a daughter, Diane (& Fred) Triquet of Paw Paw, Michigan; granddaughters Jennifer (& Russ) Smithyman, Suzanne (& Brian) VandenBrink, Kathleen (& Todd) Hurley, and Sarah (& Jeff) Curry; great-grandchildren MacKenzie, Zayne, Cassandra, Emma, Allen, Parker, Peyton, Eliana, Jaxon, and Alexia; and many nieces and nephews.
The Catholic Funeral Liturgy for Alfred Justice will be read at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home in Niles by the Rev. Christian Johnston of Saint Mary Catholic Church. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery, and will conclude with the Full Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post #51 of Buchanan, Michigan.
The family will receive relatives on Monday at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. Contributions in memory of Al may be made to the Talons Out Honor Flight, Post Office Box 280, Portage, Michigan 49024.
